TANTRA (Sanskrit, "to weave") is a pure wild silk (Tussah) spun for us in Japan. Wild silk is different from cultivated (mulberry) silk in that the cocoons are harvested after the moth has left. This means that the fibers are shorter, since there is an escape hatch hole in each cocoon. This gives the yarn a slightly fuzzy texture and a little bit less sheen. We happen to like that! The texture also makes the yarn less slippery, so that it can be knit in a more open stitch without risk of losing shape. Please check TANTRA on our price comparison page. In terms of yield (cost per square foot) of knit fabric, it is one of the least expensive products we offer. For a pure natural silk harvested in the wild this is an extraordinary value!
